I'm sure a lot of you are wondering one big thing right now: Why dedicate a page to Pete Wisdom of all people? I mean he was in the books for oh about 25 or 30 issues and yet instead of doing a page to a long standing character, I'm doing a page to Pete Wisdom.
Well the answer to the question is really simple for me. I loved Pete from the moment that Warren Ellis, his creator, put him into Excalibur.
Pete wasn't like the other heroes that we'd been introduced to. He smoked and drank, which yeah, Wolverine used to do those things, but when Pete was introduced in the nineties the X-writers were cleaning the characters up to the point that Wolverine wasn't smoking his cigars anymore and you rarely saw an X-men drink. So, in that way, already, Pete Wisdom was different.
Pete was the anti-hero of the X-men and he was great. He was sarcastic, downright evil sometimes, drank, swore (with a British accent) and refused to wear anything but black suits with a black tie and a white shirt. He was honest and when it came to Kitty, unfailingly loyal. His moto was that he would do "whatever needed doing" and he did that, no matter the cost. He was a breath of fresh air into not only Excalibur but into comics in general. He was so different that I actually got excited for the first time in years picking up comic books again. I liked him when they introduced him, even before the greatest perk of my life came into Excalibur. And that is when Pete and Kitty Pryde started dating.
I was on cloud nine for years watching as Kitty and Pete dated and how great they were together. I am one of the Kitty Pryde fans who were not only relieved to see her dating someone other than Colossus (whom I never really found that interesting) and finally showing people that Kitty was grown up and over him, but also that they found someone so compatible with Kitty to hook her up with. Pryde and Wisdom, as they became known, were a great couple that to this day have a very devout fan following, myself included. The couple still live in fan fiction where they are together and the universe makes sense.
Yes, there was a pretty big age gap between Kitty and Pete (how much of one people are still debating, but it is at least 10 years), but it worked. Kitty has always been mature for her age and she's always had a hard streak in her. Pete was good for her in that he could match her sarcastic comment for sarcastic comment and he could match her ruthlessness...not only could he match it he found the fact that she could beat the heck out of any bad guy sexy as all get out. Their senses of humor were on the same spectrum and the dialogue exchanges between them were classic. Pete showed Kitty that she was, in fact, beautiful (which for Kitty has always been a bad area for her...she doesn't have a very high self esteem when it comes to her looks) and in his eyes close enough to perfect and Kitty showed Pete that he not only wasn't beyond hope, but she showed him what he could BE if he only tried. And he did. For her.
I miss Pryde and Wisdom and I just miss Pete Wisdom being around. He was a great character and right when Warren Ellis left Excalibur Pete's character (not to mention everyone else's) went to heck. Kitty and Pete were broken up and Kitty returned to America with Colossus and Nightcrawler. I ignore that ever happened (just in case people are wondering) when you read things on this webpage.
