Lockheed's History

Lockheed is a small alien creature resembling a dragon of Earthly legend. The X-men once went to "Broodworld", home of the malevolent alien race known as the Brood when they were kidnapped by Deathbird and sent to Broodworld to die. The X-men were infected with the Brood virus and were slowly turning into the evil creatures. One of those X-men, Kitty Pryde, while fighting the Brood with her fellow X-men, got separated from the group. She started to wander through the Brood palace and in one part she was in she noticed broken eggs and Brood skeletons. She took off, not wanting to know what had killed off so many Brood, not knowing she was being followed. Kitty was going down another corridor when suddenly Brood popped out of nowhere. The two Brood were about to take Kitty down when the Brood spotted something behind her and yelling in fear they ran for their lives. They didn't get far. A blast of fire destroyed the Brood in mid-run. Kitty turned, scared out of her mind, thinking she was going to see a worse monster then the Brood. What she saw, it turned out, was a small flying purplish dragon that was far from a giant monster. Kitty thought it was one of the coolest things she'd ever seen. She and the dragon hit it off immediately and the dragon followed her throughout the palace. The palace, however, was later destroyed and the X-men ran for it. In the confusion, Kitty lost track of her new little friend and she thought he had perished with the planet.

A little bit later, Kitty was home alone with Professor Xavier. She was upset because Professor Xavier had demoted her from the X-men to the New Mutants and was working overtime to try and show him that she had a place among the X-men. She was working on stuff in her room when the alarms went off. Kitty looked on her computer screen to see where the disturbance was and seeing that it was in the lower maintainance tunnels she decided to check it out on her own. She phased down the the tunnels and looking around found a cable that had been chewed through by something. She telepathically contacted the Professor who told her to get out of there until the other X-men came home, but she didn't have the chance. She turned around and was scared to death by an alien face inches from her. After her initial shock she realized the alien face belonged to the small dragon that had been on Brood world. She was overjoyed to see the small dragon and they had a joyous reunion. It was then that the Sidrian Hunters attacked. Kitty quickly found that her phasing ability didn't work as soon as one of the Sidri hit her with a laser beam. Kitty was outnumbered and did the best she could (pretty awesome fight scene by the way) and did pretty good with some help of her dragon companion, but was about to get stomped into the ground. Luckily, Collosus showed up and was able deflect the laser that was meant to kill her.

Kitty was trying to figure out where the young alien went, realizing that they were still in danger because the Sidri always had nests. It was then that the young dragon came out of one of the rooms in the maintance tunnels, the room on fire behind him, and burped. Kitty quickly realized that he had wiped out the nest of Sidri by feasting on them and because of this the X-men were now safe.

Kitty later talks to Professor Xavier in his study and we find out several interesting things at one time. Kitty had proven herself a worthy X-men down in the tunnels doing what she had by herself and so Professor Xavier put her back on the X-men. Two, Kitty had named the small dragon Lockheed, taking his name off of a fairytale she'd told Illyana Rasputin when she'd first arrived at the mansion (one she had made up) where Kitty had made the Blackbird Jet into a dragon she called "Lockheed". And three, that Professor Xavier could not read Lockheed's mind and he wondered if maybe the young dragon had a dialect all his own, but he still cannot (and to this day no telepath can) read Lockheed's mind. Xaiver told Kitty that Lockheed could stay with the X-men since the dragon had no home to go back to. Kitty was overjoyed and she and Lockheed started a very long and devout friendship. Lockheed has since appeared in almost every issue Kitty has been in, with the exception of the last six years in which Lockheed went MIA and Kitty lost her mind and things started getting weird in the X-men universe.

It is not known whether "Broodworld" was Lockheed's home planet or how he reached Earth. Nor is it known whether there are other living members of his race, although in Excalibur it showed that Lockheed's race was still alive. But we do not know if this was merely a hallucination since Lockheed was on the verge of death when we saw it in the comics. It is not known whether he is a child or adult or if he will grow larger, but many writers assume that Lockheed is indeed a baby dragon because of the broken eggs/nest found on Broodworld when Kitty met Lockheed.

Lockheed appears to be quite intelligent, seems able at times to understand English and has been known to talk in phrases (I do NOT acknowledge what Raab did with Lockheed talking in complete sentences) and even at times to have a language of his own because Professor Xavier tried to read his mind a couple of times and thinks that Lockheed has a dialect that no one on this plaent can decipher. Lockheed has been helping Kitty with her computer equipment for years and he is one of the few friends she had, other than Magik, who could "talk" Kitty out of a temper and make her realize how stupid she really was being. Lockheed has had many cute moments and if he is not with Kitty in the forefront he is always in the background somewhere (you'll get to see that in the gallery I'm sure :-).

The extent of Lockheed's strength is unclear. He can probably carry carry the equivalent to his own weight (in addition to supporting his own weight) aloft in flight on normal days and he's been known to lift Kitty's weight in a pinch. His forepaws are too small to do much, so he usually carries objects is his mouth, but in later days of comics he's been carrying more and more in his forepaws, such as shopping bags in Excalibur among other things. Through an unknown process, Lockheed can exhale flame at will (see powers for further theories on that). The highest temperatures that this flame can reach are unknown, but Lockheed can wreak considerable damage with it. Lockheed is himself immune to intense heat and flames, within certain undefined limits. Lockheed's batlike wings enable him to fly. His highest rate of speed is unknown, but he's small and VERY fast.
