The Greatness of Emma Bull
Today I am going to give my review of a couple of Emma Bull's books that help make her the greatest writer in the universe. I'd give some of her song lyrics too, but I want you all to hunt down her music and see for yourselves how great she is, so I'm going to make you look for it all yourselves in the music area anyway *sticks out tongue*.
Now then you are probably wonder what Emma Bull writes. Well that is an easy one to answer. Emma Bull writes science fiction/fantasy and does an awesome job of it. Now I am probably Emma Bull's greatest fan in the universe, but I WILL be objective when it comes to the critiquing of these books. So, here we go...
Book 1: Bone Dance
From the book jacket: "Sparrow's my name. Trader. Deal-maker. Hustler, some might call me. I work the Night Fair circuit, buying and selling pre-nuke videos from the old Earth. I know how to get a high price, especially on Big Bang collectibles. But the hottest ticket of all is the information on the Horesemen--the mind-control weapons that tilted the balance in the war between the Americas. That's the prize I'm after.
But it seems I'm having trouble controlling my own mind.
The Horsemen are coming."
My opinion of the book: This is actually one of my least favorite Emma Bull books, so I decided to do it first. Now don't get me wrong. The book is written well and the plot works with the characters involved, but my problems were more basic. I could NOT care about the characters no matter how hard I wanted to just because the main character whines about his life through the whole book and isn't much of a hero to say the least and the other characters just aren't in it enough (read it and you'll see what I mean...it gets somewhat convoluted throughout the book).
I did like the weirdness that was the Night Fair though. That was pretty cool.
Book 2: Finder
From the book jacket: "Death and dark magic hang like a shadow over the city. A seductive new drug lures young runaways to their destruction. A mysterious plague spreads like wildfire through the streets. And beneath the clock tower on High Street, Bonnie Prince Charlie lies slain by an unseen hand.
The keys to the puzzle lie in the hands of Orient, the Finder, a young man with a magical gift - or maybe it's a curse - for discovering lost objects. Backed up by Sonny Rico, a tough lady cop who's gotten under his skin more than he dares to admit, Orient embarks on a harrowing odyssey through the darkest corners of this exotic and periolous urban labyrinth to save those he loves from devastation."
My opinion of the book: This is probably one of my all time favorites that Emma Bull has written. Mainly because I like Tic-Tic, Orient's partener in the book. She's an elf and so wicked cool! She's a lot like me. She messes and fixes anything mechanical, always has some type of oil or other foreign matter on her and she'd go to the death to regain her favorite wrench. I understand that way of thinking because I'm the same way.
The main character, Orient, I give credit to as being a good character just because he tries REALLY hard at whatever he does. Trouble just tends to find him. I didn't really like Sonny Rico much...she was way to into making herself look good no matter what the cost and by the time I sorta started to like her the book ended. The plot is one surprise after another with a lot of twists and turns in it, so you'll have to read it for yourselves to get everything that is going on, but it is definitely worth a read or two.
Book Three: War for the Oaks
From the book jacket: "'Tell me what you have found.'
The deep voice replied, 'There is a woman who will do, I think. She makes music, the kind that moves heart and body. In another time, we would have found her long before, for that alone. Shall I bring her to show you?'
Eddi McCandry is lead singer in a rock'n'roll band. Or at least she would be, if the band hadn't split up, if her boyfriend hadn't dumped her, if...well, there're a lot of ifs. But her far-from-mudane life is about to be turned inside out, as she's drafted to fight in a war that's going on right now, just beyond the edge of sight, a half step away from where you're standing, a faerie war that needs a mortal to make it all too real...War for the Oaks."
My Opinion of the Book: I actually thought when I read the back of this book that I might not like it, but it being Emma Bull and all I picked it up and said "what the heck". Turns out I was pleasantly surprised by the book. The main charcters in the book are pretty cool in themselves, even Eddi's bodyguard who can annoy the crap out of her, and thefore you as well, in the beginning. By the end of the book, the characters, no matter what their faults, pull together and pull their own weight and make it all work. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes the thought that we live in a normal world that has a hidden magical world just underneath.
As I run across books in my collection to scan and post up here I will of course do so. In the meantime read a book and fight that horrible primetime problem we all have going.
