Second part of Dr. Doom story. Dr. Doom has imprisoned Storm in a chrome statue form and Storm is freaking out, causing a huge storm to encompass a lot of area. The X-men fight the storm and manage to somehow get out of it alive and release Storm from her prison. She is like Phoenix in power and only Collosus can talk her down off of her ego-laden power trip and convince her to stop the storm she started. Ororo manages to get the storm to go away and Dr. Doom and the X-men call peace and put Arcade in jail (again). Arcade insulted Dr. Doom's honor and that is why he was trying to kill the X-men in a bad twist of fate. Wrong place at the wrong time. Kitty is not in this issue appearance-wise, but it is the second part of the Dr. Doom story so it's still relevant.
My Opinion: I sort of liked seeing Dr. Doom who has always been one of my favorite villans pop up and whomp on the X-men. I do miss seeing Kitty in the issue though.
Caliban's first appearance in the X-books. Kitty, Storm and Spiderwoman are out for a night on the town to see Dazzler perform. Caliban comes out of the sewers as a cloaked dark figure who is looking for "others like him". He scares the humans witless that are in the lower level of the hotel where Kitty and the others are watching Dazzler's concert. Kitty ducks under the table and changes into her uniform and slips out through the floor to check it out and Caliban ends up grabbing her. Kitty either faints or somehow gets knocked out and Storm and Spiderwoman try to come to her rescue, but get beat on instead. Caliban escapes, trying to make it to the sewer, but Storm and Spiderwoman recover and go after him. They confront Caliban, who explains about being lonely and wanting others like him to talk to. They understand and Kitty and Caliban, as well as the others part as friends.
My Opinion: This was a well done issue. It gives good credit to all parties involved. Caliban isn't a complete wimp like they try to make him out to be in later issues of X-factor, Kitty shows that she's still relatively inexperienced and things can scare her spitless. Ororo and Spiderwoman use their skils and their brains and end up not killing Caliban unnecessarily. And Dazzler manages to control a panicked and near rioting crowd of people with her powers and singing. As icing on the cake, Kitty and Caliban meet and their friendship, which lasted for years, starts in this issue.
X-men vs. Garok on their way to fighting Magneto. Kitty introduces probably her most hideous uniform (it has tons of reflecting material, roller skates and striped socks that reach up to her thighs). Kitty stows away in the Blackbird and ends up on the mission with the X-men. Turns out to be a good thing since Kitty is the only one that turns out to be able to hurt Gartok. For some odd reason everytime she phases through him she hurts him severly. She ends up saving Ororo's life by phasing at the last moment and Gartok goes flying over a ledge. Kitty plays a major role in that she is the one that ends up doing a lot of solo work to try and save the X-men from Gartok.
My Opinion: As costumes go, that one they put Kitty in in this issue is by far one of the ugliest, but funniest out of the lot. Kitty starts spiffing up her costumes to try and give a "cheerier" feel to the X-men so the more outrageous her costumes were the more she liked them. It was a pretty funny quirk of hers for a while.
It's an all out fight between the good guys and The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The story starts out with Spiderwoman in San Francisco where she stops a woman from falling to her death. She quickly realizes that the woman is not a suicide jumper as she at first thought and takes the woman to the hospital. She finds out that the woman is none other than Carol Danvers. She calls the X-men where we find Kitty, Kurt, Collosus and Prof. X in the Danger Room rebuilding after the Nagari Demon attack on Christmas Eve. Kurt hits the keys to try and reinstate the main functions of the Danger Room only to have the computer console blow up in Kitty's face. No one is hurt. Professor Xavier rushes to San Francisco to try and help Carol and finds out her attacker's name is Rogue and that Carol's mind and soul have been essentially erased by the young woman. Spiderwoman than goes and tries to stop Rogue from hurting others.
The Avengers manage to stop the Brotherhood, barely. Rogue and Mystique escape. Meanwhile Professor Xavier pulls out Carol's memories that are buried in her subconscious and you find out that Carol hates the Avengers...and with good reason.
My Opinion: Kitty isn't in this issue all that much, but you know what? This issue is great never the less. For one thing Rogue shows what a true kick butt villian she used to be and how much she was actually an integral part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The Brotherhood period show that they were villians to be contended with, at one time, before they became a huge joke. Also, this issue cleared up a lot of things for me when it came to Binary/Carol Danvers. I always wondered why she would prefer space to actually interacting with other human beings...now I know. I won't wreck the issue for you by giving you the details. You'll have to read it for yourselves and see. A very good issue.
Oh and just as a side note this is the first appearance of Maddie Pryor. She is shown as a young girl getting out of the hospital when Spiderwoman arrives, making me wonder seriously if Claremont was planning on Maddie being a clone the entire time, no matter what he has said later on (Madelyne Pryor was Jean Grey's clone by the way and was later killed in Inferno).
The X-men Vs. Magneto. It's Kitty's first run in with Magneto and she almost doesn't survive the experience. The X-men arrive at Magneto's island not knowning that Cyclops and Lee Forester are already there. They also almost lose Collosus to drowning because there is an power nullifying field around the island and Collosus walked into it under water. Kitty gives him rescue breathing while Wolverine gives him CPR and they manage to bring Piotr back from death. Later when facing Magneto, Cyclops orders Kitty to go and disrupt Magnus' computers. Kitty leaves to go and do that and the X-men get captured. Kitty reaches her destination and disrupts the mainframe enough that the power nullifiers are destroyed, letting Cyclops nail Magneto. Magneto then goes after Kitty, realizing that she is the one destroying the work of his entire lifetime and loses his temper to the point of not knowing what he is doing. Kitty tries to phase through him and run away, but when she hits Magneto's magnetic energy field. She disrupts it and causes him a lot of pain. In retaliation, Magneto sends a lethal burst of energy through Kitty which almost kills her. Magneto gets away after realizing the error of almost killing Kitty (he feels tremendous guilt after the fact which led to a conversation between he and Ororo), and Kitty by a miracle survies the blast because she was phasing at the time of the attack. She then pulls a trick on the X-men at the end of the issue, pretending to use the "force" to lift the Blackbird out of the lake.
My Opinion: This is actually one of the more classic X-men issues if you want to see a bit of how Magnus's crazy brilliant mind works. It also gives a good showing of Kitty's feelings of Piotr, Ororo's feelings for Kitty and so forth. And Kitty's trick at the end of the issue is one of the CLASSIC Kitty moments I've got to say.
X-men and the Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four are attacked by beings from another world, Asgard, after stepping in to stop Lilandra from shooting up a street (what they didn't realize was she was fighting invisible enemies). Susan Richards escapes with her son Franklin and go to the X-men for help. The X-men use enchanted arrows to reach the new dimension after Kitty shows off another new costume, this one a pink one with a crown and everything. She changes back into the tried and true black and gold before going to Asgard, however. The X-men help Susan to rescue the rest of the Fantastic Four and Reed then helps them to blow up the main computers that are threatening the planet, and all help to win the fight. Ororo says goodbye to her near boyfriend and love at the time, Arkon and the X-men return to their home planet. Piotr realizes how very beautiful Kitty is when she walks into the room in makeup and a nice outfit. He loses an arm wrestling match with The Thing but doesn't seem to mind one bit.
My Opinion: It was somewhat nice to see Piotr getting all akward when it came to Kitty being around just because they had Piotr turn into such a jerk in later issues, I often forget that he was once innocently in love with young Kitty Pryde. It was cute to see her and Piotr, so young at the time, dealing with the whole issue of first young love. It was nice to see yet another one of Kitty's unique uniforms come to fore, even if it was only for this issue. Overall it was a pretty good issue.
As far as I can see, Kitty isn't in this issue at all really, although this is a first of two parts and she IS in the second part, so consider it a building to a scene issue. Storm, Kurt, Logan, Collosus and Angel are taking on Sauron in the Savage Land in this issue. The Blackbird ends up nearly crashing and the X-men end up getting captured after trying to take on Sauron and losing. Vertigo is in this issue and a couple other old villian faces.
My Opinion: I think the issue is OKAY overall and the art is pretty darn good. And the colors are very vibrant.
It is a bad day to be Kitty Pryde. She gets the news that her parents are pulling her out of Xavier's and putting her into another school, this one owned and operated by Emma Frost. Kitty shares her first kiss with Piotr in a goodbye kiss and you get to see how all of the X-men are affected by her leaving them. Ororo is hit perhaps the hardest as she loves Kitty like her own daughter and so she offers to drive Kitty to her new school. While Kitty is getting squared away at the new school, Ororo ends up getting her mind switched with Emma Frost. Emma fakes being Ororo long enough to get rid of Kitty and then fools around with Ororo's powers, realizes it is hard to make the things she creates go away and decides to be more careful in the future. Meanwhile, Ororo wakes up to find herself in Emma's body and manages to escape her guards, although she doesn't take to telepathy at all well. She breaks into Kitty's room to make sure Kitty is okay, right when Kitty is wishing that Emma Frost would stop waiting and just get on with trying to trap her. Kitty, thinking that Ororo is Emma tries to dive through the floor and Ororo, trying to just shout at Kitty to stop hits her with a psi-bolt that hits her like a brick. Kitty goes unconscious when the issue ends.
My Opinion: Uncanny X-men 151 and 152 are probably some of the best to see how Kitty and Ororo's relationship works. The writing does very good justice to Ororo's motherly instincts toward Kitty and Kitty's feelings of love for Ororo as a motherfigure. I would definitely go out and buy these two issues if you are a fan of either character.
Kitty wakes up in a car heading down the highway with who she thinks is Emma Frost and phases through the door of the car instinctively. Ororo, in a bid to stop Kitty from hurting herself, takes her eyes off the road long enough to get into an accident. Kitty stays phased enough not to get more than winded when the car crashes, but she sees that Ororo/Emma is knocked out and decides to take her captive. She uses a special knot Ororo taught her and drags her into a secret place to hide until the woman wakes up. Ororo wakes up and tries to convince Kitty that she is indeed Ororo. She finally manages it when she undos the knot that she had taught Kitty and only she would know the solution to. The two of them then go after Emma Frost and finding her a battle ensues. Finally, with added help, Ororo gets put back into her own body and is quite grateful for it.
My opinion: The scene where Kitty uses that knot and Ororo manages to undo it in record time is a pretty classic scene between the two of them and I really liked the issue period, but that scene makes it a classic one to own in my mind.
This issue mainly stars Kurt out of all of the X-men because Kurt helps the Micronauts to escape in this issue. Anyway, the Danger Room is still being rebuilt from Kitty destroying it with the Nagari Demon, and you find out that the total damage reached into the hundreds of thousand dollar range. Kitty is in the Danger Room control room with Professor Xavier watching the X-men train, but after the session the other X-men leave and only Kurt is around to see the crash landing of the Micronauts.
My Opinion: As Kitty issues go this one is subpar mainly because she's not in it for very long. None of the X-men really are. But, it was a nice change of pace to see that damages rendered by one lowly X-men trying to save her butt could last for a long time and that YES it does take money to rebuild things like that.
One of the most infamous Kitty issues of all time. Kitty's Fairy Tale. Kitty is trying to calm Illyana Rasputin (at the time very young) down enough to go to sleep and so she decides to tell her a bedtime story. In it you have a hillarious cast of characters that are still infamous to this day. This issue introduces the Bamf, a small version of Kurt that runs around in packs in Kitty's world, Pirate Kitty and her side kick Collosus, The Wizard (Professor Xavier's counterpart), the Storm Genie (Ororo), The Fiend With No Name (Wolverine) and of course the cursed Prince and Princess (Cyclops and Jean). This is also the first appearance of the origins of Lockheed's name. Kitty names a dragon companion Pirate Kitty has Lockheed, because she turns the Blackbird Jet into a dragon for the story and so Lockheed's name origin is revealed.
My Opinion: Go out and buy this issue NOW. This is one of the all time superb Kitty issues that is definitely worth owning, is cheap to get, and will give you hours of entertainment. The way Kitty pegs and proceeds to rip on her friends personalities is great and the story even has a happy ending. How can you beat that?
Kitty makes a cameo appearance in this graphic novel as a little speck in the background of a group scene where everyone is going to pay their respects to a dying Captain Marvel.
My Opinion: This story got a lot of critical acclaim when it was released and I can see why. For one thing, Captain Marvel is a super powered being that makes a lot of others look weak. And you know what kills him? Cancer. Plain and simple and realistic for a change. A mutant/super powered being getting cancer. You see? We didn't need the "Legacy Virus" (a mutant version of AIDS that came out in the 90's). The old diseases some know all too well can kill mutants/super powered beings and if written RIGHT it can be very poignant. Captain Marvel was a true hero who would sacrifice himself in an instant and I'm sure would have preferred to die in battle, but instead he wasted away due to an illness that every human being has heard of. So, in a lot of ways his death helped to bring his character down to "our level". Other super heroes make appearances in the book, such as The Thing, and all super heroes of the world come and pay their respects to a dying Captain Marvel...which was a nice touch and a nice show of respect from one super hero to another.
Really, if you're looking for a Kitty issue this a graphic novel and therefore a bit expensive, so I'd suggest passing it by. If you'd like to read some classic good writing about the life and death of a super hero that turned out to be all too human, I'd suggest picking it up.
Kitty makes a cameo appearance at the end of this issue, but NO she doesn't play a major role in the second part of the X-men vs. Sauron. The X-men end up fighting Sauron through most of this issue with the help of Kazar and his true love. They finally end up capturing Sauron and bringing him back to the X-mansion, where Professor Xavier then runs all kinds of test on him to see if he can be cured of his aliment. Turns out that Sauron/Carl is going to be fine. Karl's true love is estatic and all are happy. Cue Kitty's cameo shot standing next to Collosus looking all happy for Karl and his true love.
My Opinion: An okay issue, but Kitty should have been in it a heck of a lot more...or at least been able to speak a line or two.
Cyclops, Ororo and Corsair vs. The Sidri warriors. Kitty is seen in a bit part in this issue when she runs through the door to Carol's room where Carol is currently angsting about not having memories or feelings for anyone after Rogue absorbed everything she was. Logan snarls at Kitty for running through the door at that moment and Kitty apologizes and then gives the message that Cyclops is wanting Carol and Logan for a briefing on a new mission. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Ororo are eating breakfast and suddenly the mansion is overcome with the sound of a very loud spaceship engine. Cyclops meets his father for the first time and he and Ororo go with Corsair to stop the Sidri, a very ferocious brand of alien that is out to destroy everything. They succeed and are then beamed aboard the Starjammer.
My opinion: A good issue for Cyclops fans to read if nothing else. It shows a lot of the bitterness Cyclops would normally not show to anyone about his feelings of abandonment by his father. It also introduces Corsair as the true bad ass he is, which is very cool. It's definitely worth a read.
The X-men learn the truth about a real live alien invasion, led by Lilandra's sister Deathbird and her allies the Brood. Kitty learns all things Shiar in a telepathic lance from Professor Xavier, which leaves her unconscious after recieving all that information. Kitty and Kurt end up getting captured and placed aboard the Shiar General's flagship. Kitty finds and plays with a clothes maker and tries to figure out a plan of action to escape. She figures since she and Kurt still have their powers they have a chance. Piotr gets hit with acid on the chest during battle and Ororo manages to put that out. He then gets stabbed through the heart at the end of the issue by Deathbird and it looks for all intents and purposes like he is dead.
My Opinion: These issues jump around in detail a little bit, so be prepared to be a bit confused from time to time. Overall, other than that, they're not too bad.
The battle for the Earth continues as we open with Piotr lying on the ground dead, it seems. Next second the X-men are on the Starjammer and Piotr is being rushed into surgery. He lives and is in commission for some of that issue. The X-men battle the Brood and are trying to figure out exactly what those revolting things are and then they see the Acanti for the first time and are blown away by the Brood's ships. Xavier is tossed into the brig with Lilandra and they are happy to be reunited again. Kitty sees Piotr getting stabbed through on a video the General gleefully shows to her and Kurt and Kitty, thinking Piotr is dead, does not cry or show grief, but instead gets really ticked off and is determined to see Deathbird and the General pay for doing that to Piotr.
My Opinion: It's rather cool to see Kitty switching outfits all the time just because she can, and it's also a really great Kitty moment seeing how she sucks it in to not give the General the satisfaction of seeing her break down about Collosus' "death".
Piotr ends up under the knife again after reopening his wounds when he gets hit really hard in battle and reverts back to his human form. The doctor kicks Wolverine out of the medbay in a humorous moment. Professor Xavier tries to contact Kitty and Kurt and in the middle of his telepathic message he senses a strong telepathic prescence in the Brood. Trying to figure out what they are he overloads his mind and ends up in a catatonic state. Kitty and Kurt finally come up with a good plan and Kitty phases through the wall of her cell. Finding out that the Shiar are going to kill her and Kurt she phases through them and warns Kurt in the nick of time. Kurt knocks out the guards while Kitty disrupts their battle armor with her phasing power. Kitty and Kurt then get out of there and sneak up on their enemies. Kitty pretends to be Phoenix and scares the snot of out the Shiar and while they are distracted Kurt grabs Oracle. Kitty and Kurt show the truth about the evil corrupt general to Oracle and show her that Lilandra is alive and well. Oracle calls the rest of the Imperial Guard to her and show them the truth and The Imperial Guard help to defeat the enemy and put Lilandra back in power. Kitty goes to try and disrupt the circutry of the main computer systems and gets nailed by an energy beam but is okay.
My opinion: Somewhat disjointed in parts, this issue is still pretty good. You can't beat the art anyway.
Spiderman is at the beginning of this issue in the Danger Room where Prof. X is putting him through his paces with Wolverine. After the Danger Room session, and a couple of new bruises for Spiderman, the three of them retire to the kitchen for breakfast. Kitty is talking to Spiderman about he was always one of her heroes and how cool it was that he was there at the mansion. She then shows off a little bit by phasing outside and opening the outside door for the Professor and gets in trouble for it. The Prof. leaves for a meeting and Spiderman hitches a ride on top of his car where Spiderman then proceeds to fall asleep. He wakes up later to find the Professor at Mr. Powers, a very influential gentleman. It turns out that Mr. Powers' son is in a catatonic state and he wants Prof. X's help to return his son to the way he was before Vietnam affected him. But, it was not to be an instant fix and Professor Xavier explains this to Mr. Powers only to have the man freak out and decide to MAKE Prof. X do his bidding.
Spiderman, who knew something was fishy due to his Spidersense decides to step in and help Professor Xavier escape. He takes on Mr. Powers' goons and while he is taking them on, Professor Xavier is fighting Mentallo, Mr. Powers' telepath goon on the astreal plane. Professor Xavier wins, but only just barely and Spiderman conquers his foe as well. Mr. Powers' son then starts freaking out. Professor Xavier explains that the boy's mind was caught in between he and Mentallo when they were fighting on the astreal plane and the boy must not have been able to handle the strain, so his mind snapped. Mr. Powers' cries over his son as the police arrive and Prof. Xavier uses his telepathy to cover what had actually happened and it ends with Spiderman cracking a comment.
My Opinion: Professor Xavier was never one of my most favorite characters in the whole wide world, but he DOES do the leader of the X-men role justice in this issue. He has to really work his butt off to win against Mentallo and he wins just because he's got more experience under his belt than the other guy (Mentallo had a machine that would leech Prof. X's powers and add them to his powers as the battle went on, so it was even harder for Prof. X to whoop him). Spiderman is a cool face to see once in a while and I had fun reading this issue. Especially when I tried to think of what Peter Parker's expression would have been under that mask as Kitty was going on about following his adventures since she was a baby. I THINK he might not have appreciated feeling old like that *laugh*.
Kitty has her first brush with adult hormones in this issue and first love. She is surprised and super happy to see Piotr alive and well, but the depths of her feelings and all of the new feelings she feels for him scare her to death and so she is somewhat withdrawn as she watches Piotr playing with Illyana on the couch at the X-mansion. Kitty walks in on the X-men discussing something else and says she's sorry to interupt but there is something on the TV about the X-men. They watch in horror as they see the people talking about how evil the X-men are and how they and their families need to be brought to justice. The X-men try to figure out a way to wipe their records from government computers. Kitty tells them that it is easy, all you need is an open ended virus that will work through the system really fast and just wipe out all of the records on them or anything having to do with them in seconds. The X-men ask her if she can do it and she says no she can't but that the Starjammers can. The X-men, to put the virus into the computer send Wolverine, Carol and Ororo into the government base to imput the virus. They end up running into Rogue, which leads to a nasty battle. Carol manages to get by Rogue and leave her to Ororo, as much as Carol wants to kill her, and ends up taking on Mystique. Carrol wins by the skin of her teeth and the X-men put the virus into the computer and get out of there.
My Opinion: This once again shows what a cool character Rogue used to be. She really whomps on the X-men, again, and shows what she's made of. Even Mystique shows more of a killer instinct then I remembered her having, which made the issue even cooler for me to read again. Kitty thinking of what to do about the X-men's identities also shows her for the true computer brain she is. Ahhh back issues...where would I be without you?
